Persia: Engineering an Empire

Look at the Conrad-Demarest Model of Empires and watch the 5 YouTube videos on the Persian Empire.  As you watch the videos, use the Model to find examples in the Persian Empire for each of the characteristics in the Model.  For example, the first characteristic under the "Necessary conditions present for the rise of empires" is "Strong government established already (central)"...What is an example in the Persian Empire of "strong government established already (central)"?

Conrad-Demarest Model of Empires:

1.    Necessary conditions present for rise of empires:

a.     Strong government established already (central)
b.    Agriculture  base able to support large civilization
c.     Neighbors are unstable so easy to conquer (warring, politics, etc) (divide and conquer)

2.    The primary reason a state succeeds in empire building is an ideology supporting personal identification with the state, empire, conquest and militarism (strong ideology as an appeal)

3.    The Major rewards of an empire:

a.     Economic
b.    Population increase and support larger

4.    Empires fall because:

a.     Grow to big to fast to maintain
b.    Economic structure is not as stable
c.     Revolutions topple the empire

  3. 1.Neccesarry conditions for an empire
a.The governement in the Persian empire showed a promising support system with an already succsessful infestructure.
b.The areas in which the persian empire ruled provided them with semi-fertile farmalnd, but much of their agricultural success required primitive aquaducts.
c.The surrounding governments and other settlements were easy to take over, but treated fairly by the Persain empire. They were allowed to maintain their own cultures and tradition respective to their regions.

    2. New roads, currency, proper trading systems, fairness, ability to keep ones culture.

3.The Major rewards of an empire:
    a. Being a part of the persian empire ensured a common currency standard that made trading much easier.
    b. The population was increasing steadily and maintaning culture, helpfully supports the growth of trade and economy.

    4.Empires fall because:
    a. Revolts became relatively common towards the end of the Persian reign.
    b. The economic standards actually stayed stable through to the end of their rule
    c. Such revolutions, as mentioned earlier, led to a new but costly system of keeping order.

  5. Conrad-Demarest Model of Empires
    1. Necessary conditions present for rise of empires:
    a. Strong government established already (Cyrus the great, acominic dynasty. Always had someone in control that knew what they were doing. State-level government.)
    b. Agriculture base able to support large civilization (Water found in rocks along with many canals used for ships, messages, and many other things.)
    c. Neighbors are unstable so easy to conquer (The places surrounding were very unstable, had no specific leader that knew how to keep from becoming conquered; leading in the simple growth of Persia. Adequate military resources.)

    2. The primary reason a state succeeds in empire building is an ideology supporting personal identification with the state, empire, conquest and militarism. (Building project, making a capitol to show off the growth of the state. Being different as a “liberator” by rescuing people from their rules, freed the Jews and refused to enslave his workers.)

    3. The major rewards of an empire:
    a. Economic (The economic benefits of an empire, like the easy access to new markets, led to more supporters and a larger population.)
    b. Population increase and support larger (The number of settled communities increased, particularly in the eastern Zagros Mountains, and handmade painted pottery appeared. More people came because they agreed with the government and its ideology.)

    4. Empires fall because:
    a. Grow too fast to maintain (So many people in a huge amount of space, it was hard to keep control of everyone and make sure everything was going the way it was supposed to go to keep from falling. The idea of expansion too quickly caused attempts at conquest beyond practical limits.)
    b. Economic structure is not as stable (With so many people crowded in one place, more diseases came about and more people became sick and needed attention, which can hurt the economic structure of an empire. Lack of circulating currency and trade deficit, and other factors not clearly economic, like environmental change and decaying infrastructure.)
    c. Revolutions topple the empire (Many other countries revolted and eventually led the Persian Empire to fall.)

  7. I definitely agree with Irlena that the primary reason a state succeeds is an ideology. It mostly involves the ideas of the basis one forms of economic or political policy. The idea of leading an empire is one of the most important conditions needed to begin creating an empire.
